JUDr. Veronika Křesťanová Dr.

Veronika Křesťanová (born on 7 June 1969 in Prague) graduated from the Faculty of Law of Charles University in Prague in 1992. She completed a two-semester study stay in Germany during her studies. In 1998, she finished her doctoral studies and obtained the degrees of Dr. and JUDr.

She worked in advocacy for 18 years from 1992 (1994 to 1996 as a commercial lawyer; 1996 to 2010 as a lawyer). From 2002 to 2010, she was a member of the Arbitration Committee of the Czech Advertising Standards Council. From 2006 to 2010, she was an arbitrator at the Arbitration court attached to the Czech Chamber of Commerce and the Agrarian Chamber of the Czech Republic.

In 2010, she was appointed a judge and assigned to the Municipal Court in Prague. At first, she heard and decided cases as a single judge at first instance, specialising in copyright and personality protection. From 2014, she was a member of the appellate panel at the Municipal Court in Prague (serving as the panel chairwoman from 2017), specialising in personality protection and non-specialised civil law agenda. In January 2017, she was appointed Vice-President of the Municipal Court in Prague, officially assuming the position in February that year and holding it until her appointment as a Justice of the Constitutional Court.

She has been active in academia throughout her professional career. Her academic efforts are focused on copyright law, media law and general substantive civil law. From 1992 to 2014, she lectured at the Faculty of Social Sciences of Charles University. She has also been lecturing the at the Faculty of Law of Charles University since 1994 and at the Film and TV School of Academy of Performing Arts in Prague since 1999. She also lectures for the Czech Judicial Academy.

She also has hand-on experience with the legislature from before 2010: she was a member of the expert committee for the drafting of the 2000 Copyright Act, participated in the drafting of some amendments to the said act and some other media legislation, as well as in the drafting of the Civil Code sections that regulate licensing issues. She is a co-author of commentaries on the Copyright Act and the author or co-author of other expert publications or articles in her areas of specialisation.

She is a member of the Czech Union of Judges and its Ethics Court.

In 2015, she received the 2014 Lawyer of the Year award in the field of intellectual property law. In 2022, she was awarded the Flamma 2021 prize for inspiring female lawyers.

She enjoys spending her free time with family and friends. She is also an active runner and an admirer of art and culture.

On 8 August 2023, the President of the Czech Republic appointed her as a Justice of the Constitutional Court.
