Since 1997, he has been teaching law theory at his alma mater in Prague, where he became a docent (associate professor) in 2006 and was appointed professor of law theory in 2018. He also lectures at a number of foreign universities, both in Europe (e.g. faculties of law in Toulouse, Zagreb, etc.), in the USA (e.g. Cornell University, University of South Carolina, University of San Francisco, etc.) and in Israel (Bar Ilan University). He is a professor of human rights at the New York University in Prague. He is a member of the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Law of Charles University (since 2012) and a member of the Scientific Committee of the Centre for Constitutionalism and Human Rights (CHR) in Prague (since 2022).

His first steps in the legal profession led to advocacy. From 1997 to 2001, he worked as a legal trainee (articled clerk) in Prague; he passed his bar exam in 2000. During his studies in the USA, he actively participated as an expert in Czech and Czechoslovak law in several important cases, e.g. in the Assicurazioni Generali S.p.A. Holocaust Insurance Litigation from 2002 to 2004.

After returning to the Czech Republic, he was a judicial assistant at the Constitutional Court for three years from 2004, during which time he also participated in the Legislative Council of the Government of the Czech Republic.

In 2008, he was appointed judge and assigned to the Supreme Administrative Court after being appointed an ad hoc judge of the European Court of Human Rights only a year before.

In addition to his academic work, he also regularly lectures to judges and other practitioners at home and abroad. He is a lecturer at the European Academy of Law in Trier (ERA) and he was a senior expert of the HELP programme of the Council of Europe on judicial methodology of law interpretation and human rights protection at judicial academies in Poland, Romania and Bulgaria (2015–2017), an expert of the EU Commission on the promotion of constitutional and legal reform in Macedonia (2012), Bosnia and Herzegovina (2013) and Serbia, where he also gave regular lectures (2017–2019). He was also an EBRD expert in support of legal and constitutional reform in Moldova (including repeated expert visits to Chisinau in 2011–2015) and an EBRD expert in support of legal and constitutional reform in Albania (2012). He occasionally lectures at the Czech Judicial Academy and regularly at the Slovak Judicial Academy.

He is the author of a number of monographs on the judiciary and judicial interpretation of law, as well as of several hundred articles; his works have been published in English, Arabic, Russian, Bulgarian and Chinese. He has also contributed to several commentaries (e.g. on the Enforcement Code, the Anti-Discrimination Act, the Code of Administrative Procedure and the Civil Code). In September 2022, Leges published a commentary on the Charter of Fundamental Rights and Freedoms and Kühn was one of its four main authors.

In his spare time he tries to be active (fitness and recreational running) and likes to sauna.

On 19 December 2023, President Petr Pavel appointed him a Justice of the Constitutional Court.
