Former Justice Pavel Varvařovský has been elected an ombudsman

Pavel Varvařovský, Justice Emeritus of the Constitutional Court, was elected today a public defender of rights (ombudsman) by the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament. He had been nominated by the Senate of the Parliament.

Pavel Varvařovský (*1945) graduated from the Charles Law Faculty in 1968. In 1973 he earned a doctorate in administrative law. In 1969-84 he worked as a company lawyer for various state enterprises. In 1985-90 he lectured at the Institute for Continuing Education of Medical Staff in Brno. In 1991 he was an advisor to the Representative of the CSFR Government for Refugee Matters. In September, 1992 he was appointed a judge of the CSFR Supreme Court and, on 1 January 1993, a judge of the Supreme Court.

 

In March, 1994 President Václav Havel appointed him a Justice of the Constitutional Court. His ten-years’ term expired on March 29, 2004.
