Delegation of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Moldova visited the Constitutional Court of the Czech Republic in Brno

Constitutional courts are generally defined as judicial bodies for the protection of constitutionality, and their role consists mainly and primarily in adjudication. Even though international relations as such cannot form the basis of their work, they can significantly enrich their work. The position of constitutional courts in the legal and political systems of their respective countries is often unique. In a national setting, they usually lack a partner with analogous powers. Usually, there are also no bodies that are superior to them. In this context, international cooperation is an important means by which constitutional courts can consult, discuss and broaden their perspectives, since it is often constitutional courts outside the national borders that face similar challenges. Sharing experiences can often help to solve them effectively.

The Constitutional Court of the Czech Republic pays due attention to international judicial cooperation and is a stable part of supranational judicial structures. From 2017 to 2021, our Court chaired the Conference of European Constitutional Courts (CECC), the most important platform for multilateral cooperation of the highest bodies of constitutional review. The presidency was handed over to the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Moldova.

The issues and challenges of contemporary international judicial dialogue were therefore one of the main topics of the bilateral visit, during which the Justices of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Moldova met with their Czech counterparts in Brno. The programme of the visit opened with a working dinner on Monday. The following day, a several-hour meeting took place with the participation of the Plenum of the Constitutional Court of the Czech Republic. In addition to international cooperation, discussions focused on the redress of historical wrongs through the courts. Given the still relatively recent experience of both countries with totalitarian power, the topic has not lost its relevance. The protection of democratic values and the rule of law was also discussed.

The delegation of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Moldova was led by the President of the Court, Ms Domnica Manole. It was also composed of Justice Nicolae Roșca and Justice Liuba Șova.
