The Constitutional Court has a new President and a new Vice-President

The term of office of the President of the Constitutional Court, Pavel Rychetský, ended on Monday 7 August. The President of the Republic therefore appointed Justice Josef Baxa as the new President of the Constitutional Court on 4 August 2023 (effective 8 August 2023). This act does not require the consent of the Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic (unlike the appointment of a Justice of the Constitutional Court), and it is therefore at the sole discretion of the President of the Republic which of the Justices he appoints as President (or Vice-President).

Josef Baxa is the fourth President of the Constitutional Court of the Czech Republic. In his own words, the President of the Republic decided to appoint him because he appreciates his lifelong work in the judiciary, his wide legal experience and, above all, his tenure as President of the Supreme Administrative Court.

On 4 August 2023, the President of the Republic appointed Kateřina Ronovská, a professor of civil law at Masaryk University, as a new Justice of the Constitutional Court. The President of the Republic also appointed Kateřina Ronovská to the position of Vice-President of the Constitutional Court. He particularly appreciated her international experience, her outreach to civil society and her energy, which qualify her for this position.
